Vendicari Nature Reserve
Just a few kilometres from the ancient city of Syracuse, between Noto and Pachino on the south-east coast of Sicily, lies the Vendicari Nature Reserve. The characteristic wetlands are home to hundreds of species of migratory birds stopping on their way to and from their breeding grounds. The Vendicari nature reserve with its numerous nature trails that wind their way through Mediterranean maquis, juniper forests, marshland and jagged rocks is ideal for hikers, walkers and bird watchers. A hidden gem that is the perfect place for those who want to enjoy a unique, memorable holiday. Browse our collection of villas for rent in this area of Sicily: exclusive properties handpicked for you. The Vendicari nature reserve, best loved for its beautiful sea and glorious sandy beaches preserved in their natural state, can only be reached on foot from one of the four entrances to the reserve: the beaches of Eloro and Marianelli, to the north, the bay of Calamosche, between two rocky promontories, the beach of Vendicari, the main entrance to the reserve, and San Lorenzo to the south. Immersed in these magnificent natural surroundings are some important archaeological sites, from the Greek necropolis to the Byzantine tombs, the ruins of Eloro and the basilica of Trigona to the Swabian tower and the ruins of an ancient tuna-fishery.
