South-east of Sicily
South-east Sicily, including the provinces of Syracuse and Ragusa, boasts a wealth of architectural and natural beauties from the majestic façades of the baroque palaces and churches in Ragusa-Ibla, Modica, Noto and Scicli and the historic centre of Syracuse, considered the grandest and most beautiful town of ancient Greece, to the fascinating archaeological sites of Cava d'Ispica and the Necropolis of Pantalica as well as the nature reserves of Vendicari and Cavagrande del Cassibile, with their tracks and trails ideal for naturalists and hiking. South-east Sicily also offers some of the island’s best beaches: from the long stretches of golden sand in Fontane Bianche, Avola, Portopalo and Marina di Ragusa, to the rocky cliffs in the Plemmirio marine area, the perfect destination for water sports. The area is also well known for its wonderful countryside and the characteristic fishing villages dotted along the coast such as Marzamemi, Sampieri, Donnalucata and Punta Secca.
