Marinello Nature Reserve and Tindari

Marinello Nature Reserve and Tindari

On the north east coast of Sicily in a splendid position on a promontory overlooking the sea, the ancient Greek-Roman town of Tindari is a well-known tourist destination, which is joined by the beauties of the Marinello Nature Reserve. One of the last Greek colonies in Sicily, founded in 396 B.C., Tyndaris was subject to various dominations over the course of the centuries until it was finally destroyed by the Arabs in 836 A.D. and subsequently abandoned. Tindari, today, preserves a magnificent archaeological area including a Greek Theatre, the Antiquarium, the remains of ancient walls, the basilica and a Roman quarter with spas and houses. Between the promontory and the sea lies the Nature Reserve of the Laghetti di Marinello with its everchanging landscape following the seasons and the tides. A thin spit of sand hides four characteristic salt water lakes, caused by the sea flowing into the bay. Cultural events in Tindari and Marinello reserve include theatrical performances in the summer months in the splendid Greek Theatre.
