Acireale is an ancient spa town on the eastern coast of Sicily, 20 km to the north of Catania. Its history has been scarred by earthquakes and the volcanic eruptions of Mount Etna that have redesigned the area on several occasions. The most recent reconstruction – following the earthquake in 1693 – gave rise to the typically baroque magnificence we see today making the town one of Sicily’s most beautiful. Of particular importance are the church of San Sebastiano, the Zelantea art gallery, the traditional puppet theatre and the cathedral square with its fascinating baroque architecture. Acireale is also famous for its carnival procession of painted carts and allegorical papier maché figures that attract tourists from all over the world. The surrounding area has no less to offer with its volcanic landscape, the Cyclops Riviera, Aci Trezza, Aci Castello; the little fishing villages of Santa Tecla, Stazzo, Santa Maria la Scala… located below the Timpa promontory made of, layers of ancient lava deposits that reach the height of 200 metres. Nowadays the Timpa is covered with rich vegetation and is of significant naturalistic and geological interest.
